Linda Edna Cardellini (n e Lorraine (Hernan), was the daughter of Wayne David Cardellini (a businessman) in Redwood City. She is of Italian, German (from the paternal grandmother), Irish and Scottish heritage. Linda was raised living in California in the San Francisco Bay area, California and was the eldest of four children. At the age of 10, she began to be fascinated by acting, when she performed in a play at school. The school play she performed in was and in local theatres. Her career began in 2010 with the British television series Just William, in which she was a student at the London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Following her role as Lady Rose MacClare in the period drama series Downton Abbey (2012-2015), her breakthrough was the title role in the film of fantasy Cinderella (2015). James later played the Countess Natasha Rostova on the TV adaptation of War & Peace in 2016.
